Nicolas GhesquiĆØre is the creative director for the house of Balenciaga. He worked previously as an assistant to designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, then at PĆ“les designing their knit wear line followed by a series of inauspicious assignments with different companies including the Italian house of Callaghan. In 1997, at the age of 25, GhesquiĆØre was the surprise choice to head Balenciaga. He is known for his sense of "silhouette," pairing high-waist skinny pants with a voluminous "blouson," or a tightly cut wool jumpsuit with billowing sleeves. His work soon turned Balenciaga into a critically acclaimed fashion house. An aspect of the designer's devotion to the house's legacy is his respect for CristĆ³bal Balenciaga's original design concepts.

Gareth Pugh is a
fashion designer who has received global recognition for both his outlandish
clubwear and his novel approach to redefining modern luxury. Style.com describes
him as the "latest addition to a long tradition of fashion-as-performance-art that
stretches back through Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Vivienne Westwood to
the eighties club culture of Leigh Bowery.” Klaus Nomi has
also been suggested as an influence on Pugh. Pugh's collections are
autobiographical rather than referential, and draw inspiration from Britain's
extreme club scene. His trademark is his experimentation with form and volume and he often uses "nonsensically shaped,
wearable sculptures" to
"distort” the human body almost beyond recognition."

A
former Narciso Rodriguez intern, Jason Wu launched his eponymous line in 2006
and quickly became a favorite of downtown starlets who appreciated his
signature brand of fuss-free elegance. From full-length gowns to more casual
daywear, Wu’s pieces have clean, classic lines and incorporate bright colors
and prints without being flashy. The result is modern and wearable but
consistently noteworthy. Case in point: Out of an elite cast of wannabe
Michelle-dressers, it was Jason Wu—or rather his white, one-shouldered,
silk-chiffon-and-Swarovski-crystal gown—that was selected by the First Lady for
her inaugural-ball appearances.
